In recent years, the City of Savage has demonstrated a strong commitment to involving residents in shaping the community’s future. This dedication was notably recognized when the city received the League of Minnesota Cities 2025 City of Excellence Award for its community engagement efforts surrounding River Bend Park.
In 2023, following safety concerns at River Bend Park, the city temporarily removed the basketball hoops to ensure public safety. The decision sparked diverse reactions among residents, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to address community issues. In response, city leaders initiated a transparent and inclusive engagement process, partnering with School District 191, the Community Equity Commission, and the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission. This comprehensive strategy included community forums, targeted interviews, and outreach to neighbors, youth, and local businesses, allowing residents to voice their experiences, ideas, and safety concerns. The feedback was then summarized and presented to the Savage City Council, ensuring that community input directly influenced the park’s future plans.
Beyond this initiative, Savage continues to prioritize community involvement in various aspects of city governance. The city’s Community Development Department oversees planning and zoning, building inspections, and code enforcement, ensuring that proposed projects align with the community’s needs and standards. Residents are encouraged to participate in public meetings and provide input on developments that affect their neighborhoods.
Furthermore, the Savage City Council, comprising a mayor and four council members serving four-year terms, holds official meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month. These meetings are open to the public, providing a platform for residents to stay informed and engaged with city decisions. Agendas are made available prior to meetings, allowing community members to prepare and participate effectively.
Savage’s proactive approach to community engagement sets a benchmark for inclusive decision-making in city governance. By fostering open communication and collaboration, the city ensures that the voices of its residents are heard and valued, leading to a more cohesive and responsive community.
